don't ask me how i know this story's true
be careful when you're lost without a clue
the age old tales of mortal men
from time to time repeat again
and everyone believes it's something new
it's all revealed by a circumstance of intentions untoward
there ain't no angels in cadillacs when the devil drives a ford

the lessons you won't learn unless you bleed
a mighty oak won't grow without a seed
the memories will never end
in what you save and what you spend
you'll find that you've got all you really need
i long assumed it a consequence of the feelings i've ignored

i hope you learn before it's time to go
there's no escape and you'll reap just what you sew

that told you everything you need to know
when your wings appear do not hesitate
